I was going to write that the best way to be successful is by helping, and seeking the help of, others.
Recently a company I've worked with closed down, letting go all staff. I've was very impressed by how people rallied round to help those suddenly out of work. We learned it in Covid, and it's still going strong: an empathic thread through our work communities.
The opportunity to develop people is one of the great rewards of having power in a business. You should watch this excellent TEDtalk from Margaret Heffernan, a five time CEO and excellent writer of business books, which says far more than I could about the necessity of helping, and avoiding the ‘star’ principle to create collaborative, long lasting enterprises where everyone in the room matters.
